Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students, 6th graders in a brand new middle school in LIC, Queens, have shown great promise in New York City school debate competitions in their first year. The competitions pit two-member teams against each other, and in order to get formal practice, lecterns would be greatly appreciated.
My students are full of determination, curiosity and grit.
Sixth graders in a brand-new middle school, 30 students form our first school debate team, and we have already performed impressively in several city-wide competitions, including first place in our last match.
These young scholars are amazing--persistent, intelligent, and full of desire to improve and grow every day.
Our entire school just competed in an internal debate competition in Humanities class, and, as you can see from the photo, might have benefited from lecterns.
A gift of four lecterns would not only help our Debate Team, but all students in class presentations.
The ability to confidently speak effectively in public is a rare but special gift. I think this donation would really help my students improve and proudly speak with their heads held high and their voices strong and clear.
My Project
Debate team members would use these materials to practice and prepare their delivery for the monthly, city-wide competitions during our Debate class, which meets three times a week.
When not in use for Debate class, most if not all of our teachers will take advantage of these lecterns for class presentations, sharing when the needs arise in specific subjects.
I believe that in order to be a confident public speaker, you must learn to physical control.
A lectern provides assistance in three areas:
I. Students will have a place to put their notes, instead of holding them, avoiding dropping of their heads and soft, unclear speech associated with this posture
II. Students will stand up straighter, allowing more volume and clarity;
III. Nervous presenters would have a "security" barrier between them and the audience, providing confidence.
