Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I mentioned to my students that I had started a Donors Choose account with an environmental protection project in mind. One of my students asked, "Why would anyone give us money?" It is sad that these students feel swept under the rug. I believe in their potential and hope you do also.

I started working at this Middle School in the end of January.

I quickly learned that my 5th period MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement class had a poor reputation. As I met new colleagues, I heard negative comments about my 27 spirited 8th graders. I quickly noticed that they were highly motivated by project based learning. They seem to take pride and try their best when it comes to plays or special events. As I considered projects to incorporate into my class, going green came to mind. I am passionate about this and it is something my students can do to help the environment and change negative opinions about their potential. I have learned that we have the largest number of middle school students n the district, and with that comes responsibility. According to the principle, our school desperately needs some good news. I believe my students have the potential to bring that about.

My Project

The class I am requesting materials for is an 8th grade MESA elective. Through this program students are encouraged to pursue careers in engineering. During class we focus on math and science enrichment activities. Considering my passion for the environment and my student's strengths, I decided to focus on environmental engineering. For the next few months my students will learn what it means to be an environmental engineer and what we can do to help protect the environment. They will also work on making our school more environmentally friendly. The materials I have requested will allow the students to recycle paper.

I believe this project is important for my students because they deserve the opportunity to show what they can do.

Some students feel that no one is there for them and school has become much more than just a place to learn. Using my own limited resources, the project can only go so far. I would like to be a role model by showing them that with hard work and determination they can achieve anything. I will continue to do my best, however, help is always appreciated.
