Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Motivating students is a huge challenge! I introduced DaMath board games to my students in December 2010, and the tournament was a huge success despite the scarcity of resources. Students need timers and DaMath boards (checkers sets) this year and in the next DaMath tournament.
My classes are heterogeneous groups which include ESL, gifted, and learning disabled students.
They are at different academic levels ranging from far below basic to advanced.
I strongly believe that every student can be successful in a classroom if given the needed support and accommodations. Our small school showed a significant improvement on state tests last year.
My Project
I introduced the DaMath board game at our school in November 2010. The game's name, “Damath,” comes from the Philippines popular board game “dama” and “mathematics.” DaMath rules are similar to checkers board game with a math twist. Aside from enjoyment, the game is meant for educational purposes, to enhance and master different math skills.
DaMath has different levels depending on grade level and math subjects. High school level DaMath includes integers, radicals, logarithms, and trigonometric functions.
The first DaMath tournament was held in December 6-10, 2010. DaMath became popular to students. Students showed up before school, lunch time and after school to play and to master the skill at the same time. Last year's tournament was opened to every student at our school. Sportsmanship, honesty, fairness, and responsibility are just some of the core values they developed during the tournament.
My students became interested to the DaMath board game.
They created DaMath board games and chips and spent time beyond school hours to understand the game and master the math skills. They learned to like and understand math better and became more self-directed learners. California Standardized Test scores are higher. Eighty six (86%) of my geometry students scored proficient or advanced in their CST Geometry.
