Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The world we live in today revolves around technology. Nearly all jobs require at least some basic knowledge of how to operate a computer. I would like to help my students become familiar with some of this technology, but it is very difficult without access to properly working computers.

I teach a group of 19 1st graders at a public school in southern Arizona.

They are a very active bunch, and it can sometimes be difficult to keep their attention (as it can be with any group of 7 year olds!) One thing that always draws them in is technology. Unfortunately we do not have a lot of access to this. I have two working desktop computers in my classroom, but they often freeze up and are too old to run newer computer programs that have come out for education. We do have a projector, and I use this anytime I can. The simple novelty of it is enough to reel my students into any topic we may be learning about. One of the biggest things we need to work on in 1st grade is reading.

My Project

The 4 Kindle Fires that I have requested would mean the world to my class. Not only can they be used as an E-Reader, but they are also working tablets. My students will be able to complete projects on them. I really look forward to using these in our listening station. This is such an important aspect for 1st graders, and we currently have 4 tape decks. I'm sure you can imagine the mess of my 7 year olds trying to use cassettes as they unravel. This is disappointing for them, and it also distracts me from my small group instruction as I try to help them. With the Kindle Fire, we could have preset books downloaded that the students could read and listen to. I have found many free books that can be downloaded to these devices and used in the classroom.

My students need to have every opportunity to succeed in the 1st grade and in life.

The biggest steps are for them to become fluent readers and savvy with technology. While it may seem unnecessary for us to have these devices, I think it could make the difference between successful readers or not. Even if it only helped one student reach their goal, I believe the effort would not have been in vain. These Kindle Fires will be able help this first grade class, and others in years to come.
