Ms. Muggeo from Charleston SC is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need balsa wood, glue and small tools to provide our students with hands on learning opportunities.

Our students want to "CREATE!" They want to "DO!" They want to "MAKE!" "When are we ever going to use this?" will get kicked to the curb for the members of our Engineering club. The opportunity to design and build their own unique solutions to a given problem will make Engineering come alive!
Our students attend a public charter school that focuses on education in the math and sciences in a rigorous, academically challenging environment.
Students of our school are a culturally diverse group; they come from varying socioeconomic levels from throughout the county. We are a small school and it is this reason that we really come to know our students and understand their interests and needs. These students are imaginative, hard-working and curious. They crave the chance to explore and realize their ideas and solutions through hands on projects. We want help turn these students into makers, doers, designers and problem solvers!
Open to students in grades 6-9, club members will have the opportunity to apply the engineering design process to develop projects for a number of local, regional and state competitions. All this while applying their math skills in the form of calculations, ratios, scale and geometry. Our first projects will require students to study structural design, compression/tension forces, and truss configurations to create the most efficient structures. Students will construct large scale Popsicle bridges and box beams made of balsa wood. Students will then get to participate in a local competition to see if their structures have the right stuff! Our students are racing to design and build CO2 Dragster Cars. Starting with a blank of wood, students must design and create a scale drawing of a race car while considering aerodynamics, drag and friction. They will then have the opportunity to construct and optimize their solution to achieve the fastest time.
Our students love hands on projects and the opportunity to learn through experience.
They have chosen to participate in the Engineering club so that they will have the opportunity to create and solve problems in an environment that encourages creativity and innovation. We believe that their participation in this club will help lay the groundwork to prepare for the future challenges of college and the work force.
