Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need to unlock the door that leads them to discover the joy of reading! Help me pave the way for my students, by providing diverse and high interest literature. Reading engagement leads to the improvement in literacy skills.
My third graders are full of questions and have an innate thirst about the world.
One of my overarching goals throughout the year is to create an environment where my students are highly engaged and excited to read ALL the time. Equally important is for my students to value diversity and know that each of them brings important ideas to the table. My students represent a diverse population. I teach English Language Learners (from Africa, Mexico, and Honduras), African American students, and Caucasian students. I also have a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Having high interest books reflecting the lives of my students is key in opening that doorway to the love of reading--in hopes that my students can continue or begin their life-long joy of reading!
My Project
Students need a way in to reading. I want my students to be highly engaged and enthusiastic about books. Having a classroom with books that have characters, stories, and images that reflect the lives of my students is vital in creating that spark that will create highly engaged readers. Highly motivating books for all students is key. I want books that reflect the experiences and lives of the students I teach. This is my second year of teaching third graders and I'm wanting to add more culturally responsive and high interest books to my classroom library. As you will see my list of books consists of various genres, from non-fiction: pop culture, history, biographies, informational and fiction: historical fiction, poetry, and realistic fiction.
All students benefit from diverse books, it allows a way to connect with the experiences and lives of others.
It's important to me that my students get a clear picture of the world they live in and to discover that reading is vital to learning! I also know that high interest books result in highly engaged readers. Highly motivated readers will improve the literacy skills of my students!
