My students are amazing and are eager to learn! What better way than through texts representing a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
I have sixteen students in my first-grade classroom.
Our school has 42% English-language learners and 57% of students from low-income families. Our school has over 500 students, and only has kindergarten through second-grade. This allows for a variety of opportunities for collaboration among teachers and grouping students for guided reading groups. The majority of my class is below grade-level for reading, and needs intensive reading intervention in order to get them up to speed.
My Project
My students need a variety of books to help build cultural awareness: Whose Toes are Those?, Chocolate Me!, and The Feelings Book. Most of the books on the list will be used during our shared reading or story time. This is a time of day when all the students, no matter what their reading level or other abilities, will come together as a class. This is a time when we can share thoughts, feelings, and personal stories and everyone else can listen. A good book read-aloud to students can spark interesting conversations, thoughtful questions, and most importantly the desire to become a proficient reader.
Improvement in reading comes with high interest stories and motivation.
My hope is for everyone to feel represented through these stories and to feel validated as a member of our class and of the larger community.
