Cultural Exchange: Bringing Urban Art To Rural Students

My students need spray paint, gloves, and paint markers to create urban art.

My Students

Help us participate in the Urban Art Movement! The 21st Century Learner demands an art-making process that utilizes marketable graphic skills such creating stencils, posters, t-shirts, and fonts. With our world moving toward a global community, it is vital to teach advertising skills.

My students live in a very rural community, surrounded and sustained by farmland.

Lately our drought, both natural and economic, has deeply affected these students. Likewise, natural fires have devastated many yields of crops in our area. Families are getting less for their same salaries, if not faced with a job loss or two. My school is a tightly knit, small community-based school consisting of less than 230 students. As a result, their parent and community-based contributions are limited based on population and tax base. Nearly 90% of our students qualify for Title One monies. Many of the students at my school are raised in a framework of poverty where they have limited access to anything - let alone art supplies. These students NEED access to high-success art projects to invigorate and feed their love for art.

My Project

With access to spray paint materials like spray paint, gloves, and paint markers, students will be able to create visually compelling graphic designs. These designs can be repeated several times, utilizing art as a means of mass communication. Students in my classroom have been working on various projects using spray paint in order to tap into the popular graffiti culture but I would like to bridge the graffiti impulse into a more constructive format. Art students have channeled their graffiti impulses on their own artwork in ways that are positive and engage higher order thinking skills. Spray paint materials would open the doors to a more professional aesthetic that lends itself to job opportunities.

Opening up the possibilities for students utilize spray paint through urban art will affect them for years to come.

Their artistic toolkit will expand to encompass graphic design skills, postering, t-shirt designs, and other highly sophisticated forms of printmaking that we need in the 21st Century.
