This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning through music, singing, and movement is so effective for my preschoolers with special needs. My preschoolers need highly motivating methods of lessons that use as many of their senses as possible. Music engages them, unlike traditional methods.

My preschoolers have special needs due to having autism, cognitive deficits, cerebral palsy and developmental delays.

Most of my students have minimal language or are nonverbal. Our school is an inner city, Title I school in a large school district. They require intensive intervention for behavior, learning language, and learning readiness skills. It's so very important to reduce inappropriate behaviors by engaging them in highly motivated lessons that exposes them to enriching language, teaches them phonics, and even how to follow directions! Music and the iPad are two of the most engaging tools for learning for my students.

My Project

For the last year and a half, I have been using the iPad for music, stories, and learning apps. I have seen how motivated my students are to use it, and the successful learning of not only letter recognition, but now knowing the letter sounds, too! Music is another highly motivating way my students learn. Usually, I have to limit the iPad to individual use, because the volume is not loud enough to use with a group. With the speaker system, I can accomplish more by using and iPad with a speaker system with my entire class, as well as individual teaching. Music and story time will come alive as they can now all hear their favorite iPad stories and songs, loud and clear. The speaker system will allow more opportunities, using proven methods for successful learning, throughout our learning day!

Teaching preschoolers with special needs requires being creative in finding ways to first motivate them, next to engage them, and finally, to have meaningful learning take place.

My 3 and 4 year old students can actually navigate, and understand the cause and effect simplicity of the iPad. Having a speaker system will allow me to use the iPad for music, stories, apps in a group setting. The speaker system will allow them more opportunities, with more lessons, using what motivates them!
