My Students

Our day consists of many everyday things in a classroom: reading, math, writing, social studies. However, inside of my reading class, I want to make changes so my students are pushed both as readers and people! They've never read a book like this, and it would help them moving into middle school.

My students live in rural Northeast Iowa.

They are farm kids, town kids, your typical rural students who love to garden, hunt, and learn about things outside of their sphere of knowledge. They attend a true "country school" one that is not in a specific town, but is in a river valley, surrounded by corn, beans, and an active eagles nest. Our school is the focal point of the community, where teachers and parents are working side by side. It's a place where students know their teachers as more than just teachers, they are members of the library board, part of the local betterment committee, and who are seen on a daily basis outside of school.

My Project

My students need 32 copies of the book "House on Mango Street" to experience what exemplar texts at the sixth grade level are like. I plan on using this story in my classroom as an end of the quarter literacy unit. My students will be exposed to quality literature, an exemplar text, as part of the Common Core Standards. Together, we will work the story (plot, characters, etc.), and also vocabulary, spelling, writing, and social studies into our unit of study.

By using "The House on Mango Street", I can prepare my students for more difficult texts found in seventh grade, along with helping to allow my students to see the lives found in different cultures.

This is a benefit because we do live in a predominately white area and this can help with stereotyping issues that show up.
