Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm excited that my students want to take the initiative to establish their own reward system in our classroom. Erica, Litzy and Angel all think this will encourage positive behaviors, as it will incentivize children to make good decisions throughout the school day.
My students developed this idea after they were prompted with the question, "How can we encourage students in our classroom to make better choices?" We had a long discussion about the bad decisions made by many students who came before them, and the unfortunate consequences that resulted from those missteps. My students suggested that more immediate rewards could be given to students making good choices. This, in turn, could lead to better decisions being made by all of my students, to include those with special needs and those from military families.
An academic skill that my students will learn relates to the art of persuasive writing. We've worked hard on this while writing persuasive essays. Students will be tasked with creating appealing brochures so as to share how their classroom reward system will work. The brochures must be engaging so that all students buy in to their reward system. A social-emotional skill that will be developed is teamwork. It will be up to the students to run the unique reward system using the materials they requested in this project. Also, students will have be tech-savvy in order to use the printers and computers with the business cards, tickets and brochures; those who are not tech-savvy will be paired with those that are, in order for learning to occur every step of the way during this project. This is teamwork at its best!
In Their Own Words
We'd like to make a reward system to encourage our classmates to make better choices in school. In order to make this system work out well, we'll need to create brochures to present the idea to them. Also, we'll need the printable business cards and tickets to operate the reward system. We're thinking the printable business cards could be like money. Kids who make good choices will get this "money" and they could use it to "purchase" school supplies! The tickets will show the "cost" of supplies.
It's going to be up to us to create a reward system that works. Students will continue to make bad choices unless we create persuasive brochures. This won't work unless we use the tickets and business cards to run the reward system well. Our teacher has made it clear to us that we need to work hard for this idea to be effective. We're up to the task!
Too many kids our age start making bad choices. We need to do something about it. So we thought of making a reward system to encourage them to make better choices. We don't want to sit around while our peers struggle; we figured that the least we can do is try to help. We hope this works.
