Do you remember the book that first captured and intrigued you? Often in my classroom, I hear students exclaim that they just hate reading. But, I know that sometimes all it takes is one book to change their minds!
My students are awesome!
They are dynamic, interesting, funny, intelligent people. They are also struggling readers that often have never connected with a book. As a reading teacher, it is my job to facilitate that process. I work with them to not just improve their reading skills and ability, but to also develop in them a love and appreciation for reading. I do that by helping them find that ONE book that changes their mind -- that sets their heart, mind, and imagination on fire and leaves them wanting more. I have seen this happen and it is electrifying! My school is a title one school, meaning that most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, so oftentimes my students have a harder time finding access to new and diverse young adult books.
This is the aim of my project: to provide them with access to interesting, dynamic, and culturally relevant books that I know will appeal to them.
My Project
My students will use these books during independent reading to both help develop their reading skills, as well as help them foster a life-long love for reading.
My goal is to develop readers, and interesting books are necessary to capture kids' hearts and minds for the love of the written word. My students will be able to check these books out to take home so they can practice reading at home.
Since I work with struggling readers, the more time they spend reading the better, so having access to these books they can read in and out of class is crucial. Many of my students don't have an extensive library at home, so I consider my classroom library an incredibly important facet of their learning experience.
I endeavor to make sure my classroom library is relevant, constantly updated, and accessible to students.
Reading is such an important part of everyday life, it is my goal to empower my students to find a love for reading.
