My classroom is designed to reach all students, not just those who fit the "average" mold. I am committed to avoid deterring children with bright, creative minds from achieving their fullest potential because they cannot conform to traditional methods of education.
My students are eager, creative 10 year-olds who love to learn.
Of course they moan and groan as they are handed their homework at the end of the day, but they return the following morning with completed work and smiles on their faces. Most of my students do not have the luxury of going home to expensive technology and internet access, so my colleagues and I work very hard to provide opportunities at school for children to learn with technology and develop responsible technology habits. I teach in a district with high poverty, but it is a community of hard-working families who care about the education of their children and trust their school to prepare their children for a prosperous future.
My Project
My students will use Chromebooks to learn at their own level, pace, and style. They will learn to code, publish their writing, practice essential skills, and complete research in a safe environment. When students arrive at school in the morning, they eat breakfast, then branch out to learning stations based on their specific needs. Some students are learning a second language with Duolingo, while others work in a small group on oral reading fluency. Some work at their level in Khan Academy Math, while others learn to code. During our math block, students may use the Chromebooks to develop surveys and graph results with Google Forms. During reading, students blog about what they are reading or research topics that are of interest to them. During writing, students compose personal narratives, essays, poetry, and research papers in Google Docs, collaborating with other students on writing projects, and allowing me to provide specific guidance and feedback to them from any online device.
No two students learn in exactly the same way.
I want to help all students reach their fullest potential, and I can do this by providing learning experiences that cater to their specific needs and interests using the requested 8 Chromebooks. I also want to be there to safely guide them through the world of technology, showing them what it has to offer and giving them opportunities to publish online postings that they can be proud of, instead of something they regret later. A lack of funding is the only thing preventing this.
