Cracking the Code on Fractions

My students need manipulatives and games to help understand and reinforce fractions. These include card games, dominoes, dice, and pocket charts.

My Students

Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." My fifth grade students are faced with learning fractions. To explain fractions is difficult to grasp; however, to get them involved in hands-on activities will bring fractions to life.

My students are dedicated, hard workers who face difficult challenges every day.

They come each day with a desire to learn and have fun in the classroom. Our school works to set an example in the community. Students are encouraged to be involved in community service projects. Each month students are given an opportunity to give back to the community. Our school also focuses on teaching our students to be kids with good character. Students have many opportunities for getting involved on campus. Students can join many different groups like Student Council, SWATT (Students With an Aptitude to Teach), BOB (Battle of the Books), Cheerleading, Newspaper Club, Mayflower Docent, plus lunchtime and after school sports.

My Project

By using the Double Sided Magnetic Fraction Circles and Equivalency Pocket Chart, I can show students on the board what we are doing. It will also allow examples to be left for students to see while they are working. Students will get hands-on practice by using the Printed Fraction Circles and Squares. Reinforcement with fractions will be given with different games and allowing students to work at their current level and understanding of fractions. Students will be able to work with a partner on Fraction Tic-Tac-Toe, Fraction Dominoes, and Fraction 500. Students will be able to do many group games with the I have....Who Has... game. As a class, we can also create games of our own with the Foam Fraction Dice and the Foam Equivalency Dice Set.

Through the use of these manipulatives and games students will interact with Math in a new way.

Fractions will seem more in reach and students will accelerate their own learning. My hope is that as students develop confidence with fractions they will begin to see Math in a new light.
