Our classroom is in an urban setting.
We have almost 70% low income students in our school overall. My classroom has many English Language Learners. Our district-wide curriculum for social-emotional learning is called Second Step. Students learn how to self-regulate, use calming strategies, cooperate with other and be assertive.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of hands-on activities and supplies including Magformers Rainbow sets, LEGO Juniors Pony Farm, Construction and The Princess Play Castle sets, a Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Figure Eight Train Set, gear sets, Play-Doh and Play-Doh rollers and cutters, sentence strips and scissors.
Our students love to practice their social skills during choice time at the end of the day. We will model and practice being careful with and taking care of our materials before we use them. We will discuss how we can be responsible and respectful with our things. We will practice sharing and taking turns.
Many of my students are just entering a school setting for the first time.
Some have very limited resources and few books and toys at home. The building and dramatic play toys will help develop spacial skills, as well as allowing for cooperative play. Students will gain experience practicing social skills when playing together.
