Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you walked into my classroom you would see organized chaos. We dance, we play, we sing, we play games - all integrated into our learning. Students may be siting on a blue bench, on a United States rug, on pillows on the floor, on hokki stools, or at a desk - whatever leads to success for them!
Our school is a Title 1 school where many of the children receive free and reduced price lunch.
They are wonderful kids who come to school energized and ready to learn each and everyday. They are questioners - always wanting to learn more about the world around them. They are future scientists - analyzing and observing natural scientific events. They are future artists and musicians - creating new drawings and songs in their writing each day. They are the next generation for our community.
My Project
Do you remember recess time as a child? Kids look forward to recess all day long - it is a time to socialize, run, and enjoy being a kid. I want to bring the fun back to recess for all the second grade students at the school! The Kevin Henke books will help students begin to have discussions about cooperation, friendship, and appropriate playground behavior. They will help set the foundation for having a safe and inclusive environment on the playground. The dot markers will help make safe boundaries visible to all students as they learn the boundaries of the playground. Once students are on the playground, I want them to have equipment to play with. We are fortunate to have a large play area with basketball courts, four square courts, and a play structure. I want to put the courts to good use and get students used to cooperative play.
Cooperation outside on the playground will lead to cooperation inside in our classroom.
Donations will help buy books to support building strong social skills and also equipment to encourage movement and cooperation. It is essential for children to feel safe in their environment and it is essential for children to move. If students can run and play more at recess, they will be able to focus better in the classroom and ultimately be successful in all aspects of the school day.
