My students need books that are written at a lower reading level but about middle school-aged topics. Baby books are humiliating.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students at really low reading levels. They plow through, but they are frustrated and ashamed. There is a book series called Orca Soundings that is super-high level interest but written at a lower reading level. It's brilliant. It is the perfect book series for my students.
Right now, almost 90% of our kids are below reading level yet we have few books that are high interest with easier-to-read reading levels.
We've got a whole wall of classics (nothing against the classics) but very few students who could read and understand them. Our school is close to becoming a level 4 school, which means many of the teachers will leave and the school day would become longer - not what my students need. If I can get them reading more, their brains will grow HUGE and gorgeous. These books would allow students to feel successful and actually complete books. The power of actually finishing a book, understanding it, AND LIKING IT would change how these kids think about themselves. I want to, instead of interspersing the Orca Soundings throughput the fiction section, I want to have a special bookcase for these books: easy to find, easy to take, easy to see which ones a student has already read. Easy to gobble up.
My Project
I will make announcements every morning over the loudspeaker about our NEW BOOKS that are SHORT, EDGY, COOL, AND....SHORT! If we can get kids reading more, their understanding of texts will grow, their vocabulary will be enlarged, they will see more punctuation in action, they will read and write better, and they will be PROUD of themselves. They might even start to label themselves as .. "readers." WOOHOO! Confidence is key. If kids can read, understand, and enjoy, they will become more confident. Confidence opens up big doors. Please open these doors for my students. They are GOOD people who have had a tough time of it. Let's give them some confidence and hope.
These books can potentially change the lives of all the students in our school.
Reading = big, gorgeous, squishy brain growth = self confidence = pride = success = more success = beautiful, wonderful, lack-of-fear success.
I wish I could find the perfect book for every person in the world. Since that's a bit out of my range, I hope to at least get the perfect, world-altering book for each student in our school.
Thank you.
You are wonderful, generous, kind, and the best role-model EVER.
