Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I started here the family and consumer sciences classroom was stocked with items that would be fine for the average person in daily use, but when the focus changed to professional cooking it has become necessary to upgrade the tools that we use in the kitchen.
My students are a really great bunch of kids.
They attend WHS in Kansas City, Kansas. It is a school with a great deal of pride and history. The program here is relatively new and the students are being exposed to a great deal of food that they haven't previously been exposed to. The students are discovering a passion for the culinary arts that is truly great to see.
My Project
The items that I am requesting, the scales and torch will be put to great use in our baking and pastry class. In baking accuracy is imperative and the only true way to do this is by weight. The scales will allow the students to execute accurate measurements and deliver consistent products. The torch will be used for a variety of deserts utilizing burnt sugar.
While college is a great thing, and I would never discourage my students from going, there are those students who are not going to college.
The culinary field offers students a very viable option that doesn't require college, and the skills they learn in my class could very well give them a leg up in that field.
