I want my pre-kinders to be "Wild About Books" and grow up to be readers! Unfortunately, I teach in a high poverty school where many of my students come to school with no experience with books. To make these stories come alive I like to connect a cooking activity to the book.
I have a class of 13 developmentally delayed prekindergarten three year old students, most are on the autism spectrum and have speech and language disorders.
Half of my families are bilingual. We are a Title 1 school which distinguishes us as a high poverty school.
My Project
After reading a story I like to connect it with a cooking activity. Whether it's making applesauce after reading It's Apple Picking Time!, or making muffins after reading When You Give A Moose A Muffin, kids love to eat! It's a great way to get them excited about reading. The iPad will be used for recipes and for interactive activities related to the story. It will build math skills, vocabulary skills, and higher order thinking skills. The microwave will be used for cooking activities.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom by adding a teaching strategy I don't currently have and I know will enhance my curriculum.
I know it will change the lives of my students for the better if I turn them into lovers of reading for a lifetime. It will make them better students and make learning easier for them in the future if they are readers.
