Cooking and Shopping in German!

My students need food props in order to set up their own German restaurants and markets.

My Students

You get to open your own restaurant? Yes! You have to draw and cut out the food item? Aaaaw.

My students absolutely love role playing and thankfully in a foreign language class, that is a huge asset.

We have the most fun on the days when they get to transform into crazy characters and show me how well they have mastered what they have learned in German. Unfortunately, we lack so many materials and props to really make these skits authentic.

My Project

Every year in German II we do a unit on food and for the oral project, students work in groups to open up their own restaurant or market. In the past they have had to draw pictures of the food items they will sell, but with these realistic food props, it will make the whole activity that much more exciting for them. Usually I give them a few minutes to set up their markets, while I step outside. And when I come in my classroom is transformed into a bustling market right out of Germany! I then go and chit chat with the store owners, making sure to marvel at their fabulous food. The students learn real world knowledge of food and get to simulate what a shopping experience at a German market might look like.

Some of my students live for the days when they get to express themselves creatively in my class.

These props will elevate this activity to the next level for them! How fun would it be to not have to draw the vegetables for your market? Very!
