Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have yet to find a book that has been life changing for them. This is a modern story that can reach students from many walks of life and open their minds to the pain, love and pure bliss life has to offer as a high school student.
My students are high school students at a continuation school.
They are at-risk youth who are looking for something to take them away from the pain they endure on a daily basis. I try to create a safe space with my curriculum and reading for students to find and create themselves without fear of judgment.
My Project
My students need 50 copies of Perks of Being a Wallflower to begin our next reading unit in American Literature. This book will hopefully serve as an escape for several students. Hopefully they are able to relate to this modern-day Catcher and the Rye story, maybe see themselves in the main characters, and shed light on their own lives. Students will be recreating their favorite scenes from every chapter through arts integration and writing. After we complete reading this book, we will watch the newly released movie version and the students will write a narrative essay describing their experiences with reading the book and watching the movie.
This project will allow these at-risk youth to find a safe space to escape their lives and hopefully find comfort in relations between their lives and the main characters.
This book has opened up opportunities for many young people's lives by simply opening their eyes to human emotion through struggle, success, and satisfaction.
