We connect our students and their learning to the outside world. Learning Spanish is an amazingly practical tool, but it needs to be practical now. That's why we try to make everything we do connected to a relationship in the "real world."
Students at C.H.S.
run the gamut of experience. We have students that are homeless as well as students that are from well balanced situations. We have a comprehensive high school that offers great opportunities but has suffered during the economic crisis. We also have more than 50 families at our school that have been affected adversely by the recent fires in Colorado.
In the midst of this, our student are curious and eager. But, they are eager for practical application. They relish the opportunity to connect with others around the world. As a class, over the last fifteen years, we have taken five groups on service and exploration trips to Latin America. However, that experience isn't practical for everyone, but connecting globally around the world with technology is practical... that's what my students desire to do.
My Project
We will use the Chromebooks to connect with other classes and opportunities around the world. To demonstrate that desire, we currently have an ongoing relationship with a Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador. We video blog and chat with our friend about her experience. Rather than projecting that for the class, we want to extend that connection to all students in our classes.
Further, we want to connect our students digitally to all of the opportunities for learning that exist throughout the digital Latin American world. When studying clothing and shopping, we want to visit online malls in Spain: when studying sports and activities, we want to connect with other clubs and teams around the world.
Our project will open the eyes of students and prepare them for living in the digital global community.
Not only will it help them with their language skills, it will assist them in being digitally capable as well as providing the spark needed to understand the greater world beyond our school boundaries.
