My Students

My students are so excited when they have a chance to use technology to improve their reading. My 4th graders read at 1st grade level. When they get to practice independently using apps and programs, they feel so good about themselves.

We are a large elementary school in Madison.

Our student and teacher population is racially and ethnically diverse. Most of our students receive free and reduced price lunch. Many of the students I work with have significant struggles with learning, particularly in reading. They don't like to read and think they aren't capable. When they read online books from programs and apps that give them feedback, they see the progress they are making. Their accomplishments can help them turn everything around.

My Project

This project will fund three computers for a work station in my classroom. The students will be using the computers to increase their reading, phonics and writing. My students will be able to follow up their Guided Reading group with me by going to the computer stations and independently working on their phonics, reading and writing skills. They will have access to the online component for our reading program, which the students find both challenging and fun. This will increase their total reading time and their productive independent work time. In addition, the students will use the computers for their writing assignments. Many of my students have difficultly sustaining the manual task of writing or resist editing hand-written work. When their writing is easy to read and easy to edit, they produce far more work.

We have so little technology in our school, and what little there is is in bad shape.

My students are so motivated when they have access to technology. Computers give them a way to read and write that is engaging and fun to use. The work they are able to produce and their increased engagement in reading are what they will take with them to 5th grade.
