My students need rolling stands for our bass xylophones, an extra alto xylophone, and extra mallets in order to be able to work in small groups around the room.
The music room is a laboratory for learning music. Students compose, improvise, problem solve, and work in small groups.
My school is located in a vibrant urban community.
The students come from countries all over the world as immigrants and refugees. Our school is a fun, welcoming place where kids love to learn. Music class is a place where everybody can work together and be successful.
My Project
Students compose regularly in music class. We use our set of xylophones to make melodies, harmony, and rhythmic compositions. We are really lucky to have a set of xylophones, but the bass xylophones are so big and heavy that it is dangerous for the kids to move them around the room for group projects. Having wheels on them would make them mobile so the students could easily wheel them to their groups. We also run out of instruments and mallets every time we do group projects. One more xylophone and 8 more sets of mallets would let everybody have their own mallets, and would give us enough xylophones so that groups could be smaller, and the kids would have an easier time working together.
Having smaller groups for composition allows everybody's ideas to be heard.
Students will be able to have easier access to the instruments, and a better opportunity for self-expression.
