The joy of reading is not a learned trait but a skill that is developed over time. Finding something that 7th graders are interested in reading can be quite difficult. I want to create a library of books students would actually want to read for fun that also improves their literacy as well.
My school is located in large city in PA.
We are part of the cities School District. Over the past several years we have been hit when several budget cuts and funding freezes, but we just keep on doing what we need to do for the success of the kids.
My students are 7th graders and around half of the class are English Language Learners, so I have a pretty diverse class. My students come from mostly disadvantaged households. Over 75% of the students in my school are eligible for free or reduced price lunches.
My Project
I have recently started silent reading time at the end of the day. I have brought in a bunch of magazines and some of my old comic books. I have never seen so many kids reading comics at the same time. You could hear a pin drop. The only problem is that it is only the start of the year and they will definitely finish reading everything I have before Thanksgiving.
That is where your materials donated come in. With your donation I will greatly increase my reading library full of content that my student would actually want to read.
With your donation imagine thirty 7th graders who are as active as you can imagine, sitting quietly transfixed on a book(comic) of their choosing, all because you decided to make a difference. Four days a week they will be reading because of you, their benefactors.
So many times in school students associate reading with boring or bland texts.
I want to invigorate them with a love of reading by giving them something they want to read.
In addition, being that many of my students are either below their grade reading level or non-native English speakers, the more they read, the more fluent they will get with the English language, this includes their grammar, spelling, and speech. All it takes is an extra 30 minutes a day of reading to start seeing a change.
