Collaboration-Making 3rd Grade Engaging and Mobile
My students need Post-Its so they can record their ideas in a fun, mobile way. I need easel paper and markers so I can display their knowledge and promote conversation.
Throughout the day, my students are engaged in whole group and small group reading and math activities as well as self selecting centers. My classroom is filled with the BUZZ of students working collaboratively with table groups or partners. My mantra: VERBALIZE in order to INTERNALIZE!
I have a variety of students from the highly capable to kids just arriving to our country.
Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. My school is an open-concept school--that means no walls! As a result, the staff work very closely together in order to maintain reasonable noise levels and provide academic and pro-social activities. Many of our students struggle with their behavior which is why many of us attend staff development classes on creating highly engaging yet academic activities.
My Project
My goal this year is NOT to use worksheets. I have used a variety of techniques this year, but what I have found that works best is to use Post-Its and large posters. The large easel paper and markers give me a chance to display and share academic information. The small Post-Its allow students to add their ideas and answers to large posters we have made. I use these posters to teach and help students review academic concepts as well as facilitate conversation and written responses. My students learn through collaboration and conversation. I believe that you need to VERBALIZE in order to INTERNALIZE.
These donations will allow me to continue creating activities that are visual, engaging and informative.
My students are encouraged to answer questions in a unique way. They are motivated to verbalize their thinking with peers as well as record their thoughts and answers. I hope that students will learn to collaborate and communicate effectively with their peers while completing class assignments that are portable and recordable.
