This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The topic of computer programming might seem like an abstract one. Often the first thing a student learns to do is basic keyboarding. Learning how to use computer applications is important but there is also a need to understand how the application is working.
I teach third grade in a rural community in Northern California.
Our school is full of wonderful students that have little or no access to digital tools at home. Many of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. The past few years we have had the opportunity to attend trainings for technology implementation at our school. One of our training sessions included learning how to teach coding in the classroom.
My Project
The robots I am requesting were used at the training that I attended. I learned how theses robots would be useful in a classroom setting. Coding is also a fun, engaging way to teach perseverance and problem-solving. Students will be able to access the robots in a "Makerspace" I am creating where they can go to be creative on their own.
Teaching students about coding in the classroom will increase knowledge and problem-solving skills that are much needed in tomorrow's competitive job markets.
Some of the jobs my students will be applying for do not even exist today. Coding or even just a basic understanding of how an application is run will be something that is needed.
