Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every class period the students walk into class eager to learn German and we explore new and exciting ways to use the language every day.

I teach German at both the middle and high school levels.

I have a large variety of students, many of which speak another language other than English at home. They enter my classroom as EL, bilingual, or English only students. Both of my schools are in a poorer demographic with a large number using free and reduced lunch. Access to technology is limited in most classrooms with a teacher-only computer and there are a few labs available. In all, my students are bright-eyed eager to learn a language like German and how they can apply it to their daily and future life.

My Project

By introducing the Sphero bots into the classroom, my goal is two-fold. First, I want to introduce the value of learning code and a form of computer programming to my students, many of whom are not technologically inclined. Second, I want to teach my students specific language skills while using the bots, such as giving and following directions and giving commands. Learning code should not be limited to solely Computer Science students. Students of all ability and curriculum levels can benefit by learning code. Not all students want or need to learn computer programming, however all students do need to learn logical thinking and learning to code can provide students opportunities to learn and apply logical thinking skills in the classroom and beyond.

By donating to this project, students who may not normally be exposed to programming and coding will have the opportunity to learn it and apply it directly to skills we are learning in the classroom.

Specifically, students will tie programming to language skills that they will use on a daily basis.
