Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Special education is not a challenge, it is my calling and life's work. I work every day in my classroom to ensure that they are held to standards that will push them beyond their limits, giving them the tools for navigating the 21st century with self-possession. More tools are needed in our room!

My students are bright and full of optimism.

Though they are in a very tough, highly impoverished area, they come to school ready to expand their learning and expecting me to teach them using technology. All of my students are second language learners; technology was their first language. We are a college bound school and the college of focus in my classroom is the student-chosen MIT. They are focused on learning computer science and engineering basics, and they are SDC students! They are so smart! I am beginning my lessons in programming through brilliant tutorials, however, the lessons fall flat for many of my very low readers. Also, I have no iPads to run the apps for them. iPads have helped my low readers with very basic reading, writing and math skills so much, they would be invaluable to their learning in the future.

My Project

My academically low students would use the iPads to learn how to code through guided lessons. They will also use the iPads every day in their small groups for reading, writing and math. More importantly they will be using them to learn the language of computer and software programming in order to give them skills that will be desired in future careers. My students struggle to organize their thoughts, which is why the structured learning involved in coding is so important to them and their academics. Steve Jobs said coding "teaches you how to think." My students can learn how to think using a language that is very easy for them to understand, digital programming. Through my guided lessons every day, the students will learn how to code websites and apps. We are going to start out with basic block coding and eventually move on to develop a class app.

The donations of iPads will help the students that are struggling to use a mouse and keyboard with the current technology that we have and help them manipulate their learning through hands-on apps.

Connecting the learning of computer language with the ability to use basic hand movements will help my students to succeed in all academic areas and it will let them participate in my daily coding lessons so they may have a chance to gain skills that will make them marketable in future job hunting!
