My students need Raspberry Pi units, keyboards, and manual, Adventures in Raspberry Pi by Carrie Anne Philbin, to complete their Raspberry Pi coding projects.
Every Tuesday, our school's learning resource center fills with 42 eager, energetic third, fourth, and fifth graders. They come together to spend an hour after school learning basic computer coding skills. Students work collaboratively, problem solve, and proudly show off their latest projects.
Coding Club was founded in January 2016 in response to student interest during participation in code.org’s Hour of Code in December 2015.
The club boasts 42 participants in grades 3-5. 42% of Coding Club members are girls, a historically underrepresented group in computer science fields. Members attend weekly meetings after school, and many code on their own throughout the week as well.
Given the success of Coding Club, we are interested in providing new opportunities for returning Coding Club members during the 2016-2017 school year. The goal is to maintain student interest in coding and to build upon the skills students acquire during their first year of Coding Club.
My Project
Raspberry Pi is a small, basic computer. When combined with a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, the Raspberry Pi can be programmed to do an almost endless array of things. We are requesting Raspberry Pi kits, keyboards, and copies of Carrie Anne Philbin's guide book, Adventures in Raspberry Pi. Using these items, students will work in partnerships to complete a series of coding “adventures." Students will be introduced to coding in Scratch and Python. They will animate characters, build their own adventure games, create music, and sense and control physical objects using GPIO pins. Using their budding coding skills and Raspberry Pi computers, students can do all these things and more!
In order to achieve our goal of providing coding experience in Raspberry Pi for second year Coding Club members, we need your help.
Donations are needed to purchase the necessary supplies. These supplies will provide many hours of coding fun and learning for up to 30 Coding Club members. Thank you for your consideration.
