Coders, Innovators, Makers: Creating a Library Makerspace
My students need maKey maKey kits, Sphero robotics, and littlebits cloud to inspire innovation, encourage risk taking, and promote creating in education.
Our library is a place where we expect the miraculous every day. Even when it doesn't come, we expect it. There is no typical day, but you will often find students connecting with classrooms, libraries, experts, and authors around the world. We create and share our creations with the world.
Our school serves students approximately 550 students in grades PreK-5th grade.
We serve a diverse population which includes high poverty and international students. Our school believes in enrichment for all students, which includes weekly enrichment clusters based on student interest and decision making.
My Project
Our library embraces a makerspace culture where every student has an opportunity to dream, innovate, create, and share those creations with a global audience. Last year, we began building our makerspace and makerspace culture by participating in hour of code and receiving a 3D printer from Donors Choose. This year, we have big plans for expanding our makerspace to include littleBits, Hummingbird robotics, Sphero, and MaKey MaKey kits. Our local budget can only support a portion of what we hope to do. By supporting this project, you are giving more students the opportunity to have hands-on experience with programming. Makey Makey, Sphero, and littlebits provide many STEM and STEAM opportunities to embed within the collaborative art, science, and math projects that we do throughout the year between our library and classrooms. These items will be available to every student in the school. Specifically, there will be an enrichment cluster focused on "making".
In order to truly provide STEM/STEAM opportunities for all students, we must have the resources available to increase access to the opportunities.
Your support of this project will allow more classes to be involved in coding, computer programming, and exploring their innovation curiosities.
