My Students

Science is the perfect subject to bring to life. One of our standards is to identify features of plants and animals that allow it to thrive. What better way to learn than through direct observation of plants and animals in the classroom!

My students are third graders, who are 8 and 9 years old.

We celebrate diversity in our classroom. We have various ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as varied abilities. Our classroom is common ground where everyone feels safe to be individuals while learning to be part of a group.

My Project

A terrarium would give students a real-life experience observing the plant and animal adaptations that enable them to live in the habitat in which they exist. Students will then work together to build the appropriate habitat for a reptile that the class chooses.

Students will take ownership in building an appropriate habitat for an animal to survive.

They will learn that it is important to keep a habitat stable. Changes to a habitat can endanger the ability of plants and animals to survive. We will make this connection to taking care of the environment.
