My Students

I believe it is just as important for my students to learn to love reading as much as it is for them to learn "how" to read. To do this we need high interest books at their level for independent reading.

We live in a small town in northern Nevada, in what is considered the high desert.

There are 19 students in the class and they are pretty typical 6-7 year olds! The majority of the class is male, but my seven girls hold their own despite the numbers! They all try hard, enjoy school, and think technology is awesome. However, the majority of them are low readers and need books that are fun and easy to read.

My Project

Each month our first graders are required to read at least four books at home and complete book reports. Many students don't have books at home to choose from, and I try to keep a selection on hand for them to borrow. Having more books of higher interest to choose from will keep them motivated and improve their reading skills.

Reading is the one thing that students learn in early grades that affects not only the rest of their education, but their entire future.

This year they are learning to read... from here on out they will need to read to learn.
