I have always had such a passion for teaching. This year I am teaching a very energetic and eager group of third graders. They greet me with smiling faces each and every day. They are constantly asking questions, challenging themselves and extending their knowledge in the classroom.
We are a Title 1 school in the Metro area.
We have 75% of our students qualifing for free and reduced lunches. I have an incredibly diverse group of students. All of them are eager to learn, and there are many who do not have access to books outside of school. I am striving for my students to have the opportunity to expand their love of reading by participating in novel studies and thematic units (including both fiction and non-fiction) throughout the year. The community I work in has been hit with devastating tornadoes through the years and each time one hits our community, we come back even stronger than before. The support and selflessness of this community makes it a wonderful place to work.
My Project
I plan to use these books to complete whole group novel studies as well as teach specific skills throughout the school year. Many of my students have not had exposure to a variety of genres because they do not have access to them at home. These children have such a love for reading, and I would like to continue to encourage them to broaden their horizons when it comes to choosing books. I am always asking my students how they can apply what they have learned in the classroom, and I would love to see them apply their knowledge through literature, and specifically novel studies. Books can be such a magical tool. They allow your mind to take places you never thought were imaginable. I love seeing my students imagination come to life through reading. It is my hope that when my students leave my classroom, they not only have more academic knowledge, but they also have more of a knowledge of who they want to be in this world.
As a first year teacher I have found myself wanting to give my students everything imaginable, but unfortunately that is just not possible financially.
Throughout my first year I have been astonished by the generosity of others. I am truly grateful for all of the help I have received from family, friends, fellow teachers and even strangers. This project would make such a difference. These books would allow them to broaden their vocabulary, apply learned skills and expand their love of reading.
