Do you remember sitting down and losing yourself in a book? Imagining what the characters look like, how their voices sound, and what the scenery looked and smelled like. Students today need to have those moments too.
Reading levels are lower than grade level, imaginations need sparked, the desire to learn needs to be tended, these are the things I want to work on for my students.
My students come from a large number of different backgrounds. Our campus has several different ethnic groups, over 20 languages are spoken on our campus, we have English Language Learners, military family members, special education students, and gifted students as well.
My Project
Getting this large groups of diverse students to understand issues from the perspective of others is sometimes very difficult. One way to help the understanding is to have a variety of books on hand for them to choose to read that center around these differences.
By allowing the students to choose which books they read, the student has some ownership in their reading and learning. These books will reach out to the reluctant learner through the ebooks and the tactile learners through the hand held books.
These books will give each student a different perspective of the African American struggle for civil rights, the women's struggle for equality, and even the struggles of immigrants.
Without knowledge the students will not have an understanding of others.
Without an understanding of others they can never be true leaders. Without true leaders, where will our society be in 25 years? Reading is the gateway to knowledge. Once the student has crossed into this gateway their success are unlimited.
