Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a classroom in which all students have access to their own Internet-enabled device in order to conduct research and access online tools and applications. With the addition of 5 Chromebooks to our classroom, this would become a reality for my class of third graders.
I teach third grade in a primarily immigrant and working class neighborhood in southern California.
Most of my students are learning English as a second language, a couple of them are receiving special education, speech, and intervention services, and ALL of them love to learn.
My Project
Over the last few years my class has been fortunate to acquire a variety of computers, such as desktops, laptops, and tablets. Some have been purchased by our school, and others have come to us from generous donors that have funded previous DonorsChoose.org proposals. We currently have a total of 20 computers (including iPads) for a class of 24 students. With the addition of 5 Chromebooks we would have enough computers for each student to have his/her own device, plus an extra one in case we get a new student. My students are constantly on our current computers for a variety of activities. They visit the Renaissance Learning website daily to access Accelerated Reader quizzes, which are quizzes on reading comprehension. This site also has two other sections: English in a Flash and Math Facts in a Flash, which improve students' vocabulary and math fluency, respectively. Students also use ST Math, an award-winning online math program that our school has purchased.
It was unthinkable just a few years ago, but with the addition of these 5 Chromebooks, the dream of a computer for each student in my class can become a reality.
No longer will students have to wait to access the Internet. Now they can just use the computers on top of their desks! Thank you.
