Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have difficulty accessing technology, which greatly limits their ability to fulfill their college aspirations. This year I want to bridge that technology gap and provide students with open access to technology so that they can comfortably reach their college goals.
Students in my AVID classes are often seeking to become first-generation college students.
These students are often identified as "the students in the middle" in terms of academic performance, however, they have tremendous drive and ambition to achieve their college dreams. AVID helps support these students in building foundational critical thinking and analysis skills, supporting students in rigorous academic work such as AP and IB classes, refine WICOR skills, provide college information and application support, and ultimately be a place where students are able to make college a reality rather than a dream. While students maintain a high level of commitment to AVID and its rigorous but supportive environment, many of my students are also involved in various extracurricular activities including sports, dance, band, orchestra, theater, etc. Students are constantly fundraising in order to take field trips to visit various colleges and take part in several hours of community service.
My Project
Students in AVID need open access to technology on a daily basis. These Chromebooks will allow students to receive additional assistance during their tutorial sessions in order to enhance their learning and understanding of high level content area questions. Nonetheless, the main use of the Chromebooks will be for students to gain full support for their college goals and ambitions. Students will be able to refine their research, writing, and presentation skills through a variety of assignments to get them college ready. In addition, students will be able to access college websites to familiarize themselves with various college options, complete college applications, and write their personal statements. It is imperative that AVID students are able to use technology to support the main objective of the program: close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Many of the students do not have open access to computers, therefore, this greatly hinders their ability to be successful in their academic classes.
These Chromebooks can bridge that gap and still provide students with open access to college websites and information, register for tests, complete college applications, complete FAFSA, work on personal statements, and build fundamental college-level research, writing, presentation, and critical thinking and analysis skills.
