Engaging a 6th grader within the classroom can be a challenge! By creating a student-centered classroom where students get their lessons in small groups, have choices in the tasks and modality of learning, and have access to reliable computers, my students will be more engaged in their learning.
My students are northern Illinois sixth graders who attend a public school.
They are from an area of moderate poverty. Like a lot of classrooms, I have a wide range of abilities in my classroom which sometimes makes it challenging to address all their needs. My students are definitely more focused when they work in small groups and they can also receive more individualized attention in smaller groups. They also love working in groups, using technology, and having freedom and choice in their learning.
My Project
My students need 6 Chromebooks to provide regular access to technology in our student-centered classroom. My classroom this year will be very student-centered and technology based. Students will need regular access to reliable (my current ones are over 10 years old) computers so that they can fully experience the opportunities I want to provide for them. Students will have a daily agenda on the computer as well as many different activities that will need computers to accomplish them. Part of my philosophy is to teach students how to manage their time and make good choices about how to use their time. Having more computers gives students the freedom to complete those activities when they need to.
I love to have a technology station for math work time, and having regular access to computers will open up a whole new world of research in my science classes.
Getting 6 new computers will open up so many more opportunities for my students.
Besides learning the basics of using a computer and Internet, students will have daily access to a world of knowledge that would otherwise be a mystery to them. In my student-centered classroom, students will have a lot of freedoms in how they learn best. Having computers will allow them to make the use of technology a choice for them!
