My students need 6 Acer chromebooks with protection plans and 6 headsets with mics to gain equity in accessing curriculum and to exercise options for communicating via multiple modes of self-expression.
Some people say, "You can't get there from here." Well, in our classroom, we believe that if we have the right tools, we can absolutely trail-blaze a path to anywhere we set our minds to! Technology along with self-determination creates just the passport we need to reach our destination.
My students are a force of amazingness sending a ripple effect of inspiration across grades 6 through 12.
They are a fearless group of students who roll up their sleeves every day with a mission to learn and be fully vested members of their school community. They work fiercely to persevere through the challenges of their communication disorders and learning disabilities. This is not always easy to accomplish in a way that feels comfortable or without feeling as though they are lone fish swimming upstream.
My Project
Having dedicated technology at their finger tips will allow my students to learn how to use technology in an adaptive/assistive manner to access curriculum in ways that are both equal and invisible to their peers within the classroom setting. My students will to learn to use Google Apps For Education (GAFE) as their "go to" for navigating how to "get there from here" with out their disability holding them back.
The 6 Acer chromebooks and headsets with microphones will also provide functional tools for the delivery of specialized services such as speech/language therapy instruction to support not only communication, self-reflection and learning but to support the development of executive function skills and self-determination skills which will carry them into the future.
Collectively, funding and donations to this project will put my students into the role of owners of their own learning, owners in their transition planning and owners in the path they choose in life.
They will become fluent communicators in self-advocacy and become masters of taking the "im" out of "impossible". Stay tuned!!!
