China: The Good Earth

My students need 26 copies of "The Good Earth" (by Pearl Buck) and 15 copies of "The Alchemist" (by Paulo Coehlo) in order to gain global perspectives connected to what we're studying in social studies.

Ms. Kennedy Bunche Middle School
Atlanta, GA Grades 6-8

We're traveling the world through reading to further broaden our perspectives, appreciate the diverse world in which we live and reinforce what we've learned in social studies. I teach seventh grade social studies and reading in an urban, high-need, Title I school and love connecting the economic, geographic, governmental and historical standards learned in social studies to the imaginative arena of reading. That way, what we learn in social studies comes alive for my students as the characters jump from the page and expose us to the commonality of the human experience.

My students have been begging to learn more about China, and because we will be taking a field trip to see the Terracotta Warriors, I would like to provide them even further information about China's history and modern development. Likewise, my students are dreamers, and Paulo Coehlo's message will surely reinforce the vivacious spirit they all show in the classroom daily. Unfortunately, my school has very few class sets of books and even fewer world literature options (currently, we only have Things Fall Apart, which we have already read). Many of my students' parents have been greatly affected by the current economic downturn and are unable to buy multiple books within a month period.

Although my students live in an urban area with many cultural opportunities, they rarely have the chance to experience them. Because I gained my earliest travel memories from reading and because I have the distinct honor of instructing most of my students in social studies and reading, the two books I'd like to share with them serve a number of purposes -- bringing other cultures to life, illustrating the commonalities and differences that we all share, strengthening reading and social studies skills, etc.

Your help will ensure that my students are not left behind in this globalized era and that they are given the same opportunities as their wealthier peers who have endless options in the library.
