Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning." My goal for my students is always to not just help them understand the concepts we need to cover, but to grow this curiosity and hunger for learning in them that stays with them when they leave my classroom.
I get to spend everyday with 25 energetic, loving, and creative first graders.
The majority of them come from low-income homes where Spanish is the predominant language spoken. Most of the students in our school come to us a grade or two behind. Our goal is to foster an environment where our students are growing academically, but also where they gain social character and experience emotional stability. My students fall within a large scale of learning levels, and each of them show excitement when learning through new materials. They thrive and are engaged when a variety of hands-on learning experiences are provided to them.
My Project
My students love it when they get to work with their dry erase boards and we use these every single day. The set I have right are battered and the lines are faded on many of them. Students often fight over which board they get because no one wants to have the damaged one. We use the boards in our reading lessons to practice writing new letters as the students learn them. I am asking for 20 storage sacks for their chairs to keep their books in, 30 nice dry erase boards, and materials to make learning in center time fun including a set of sight-word-steps, a set of Chilean rainsticks and 6 activity balls. Having new boards where all of the writing lines were visible would help my students write the letters with accuracy. With each student having a magnetic board the possibilities would be endless with the use of magnetic letters and numbers and give students more hands-on experiences with their learning. My students also love when they have a space that is their own. Right now because my students sit at tables, their books and personal materials are kept in magazine holders that take up a lot of space on our bookshelves. The storage sacks would reduce wasted travel time, allowing them to keep everything they need at their seat. The manipulatives and resources I requested including the set of sight-word-steps, and set of Chilean rainsticks and 6 activity balls will be used by all my students during their learning center time and choice time.
This project will help me continue to build a foundation for my students where learning is fun and something that they crave, that they will hopefully carry with them through the rest of their education.
