My students need 25 copies of "MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers", style guides to ensure that their senior research papers contain accurately cited sources and adhere to MLA guidelines.

My Students

According to a recent study of UC and Cal State college professors, over 2/3 of all students entering college do not know how to write at the college level. In order to ensure that my students are fluent in the technicalities of college writing, they need access to MLA style guides.

During their senior year each of our students writes a research paper on an issue of social justice.

This paper is later followed by a service learning project. Next year, my goal is to ensure that each of my students write papers that they can be proud of, and that they can articulate how using correct documentation is a sign of academic integrity. I would love to ask them each to own a style guide, but given the expense of these books, we are instead requesting a class set to share. Our school is located in California, and we are facing major funding cuts, so requesting even a class set of style guides to come out of the school budget is impossible. Since our kids are over 95% free and reduced lunch, attending an urban school, their parents cannot afford to buy many supplies. The only way that we can get these tools into their hands is with your help.

My Project

The books that I am requesting outline for students the way that sources should be cites, and papers formatted for academic writing. These books will give my students tools that help them understand how to use both electronic and traditional sources in their research papers.

By learning proper style and citation formats, students will enter college prepared to write to the demands of their professors.

Providing writers with style guides is similar to providing mathematicians with rulers. It gives them standards.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
