Oliver Holmes stated, "The great thing in the world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving." To keep up with the demands of the 21st century, school libraries need to head in a direction that embraces technology and teaches students to become proficient in its use.
My high school features a diverse group of students.
For some, resources are available, but for others, resources are limited or absent. Our school is a Title 1 school, which means we have a significant amount of students who come from low-income families. Many of our students do not have access to high end technology, which creates a disparity between them and students who are in schools with one to one device programs. Although the availability of technology is often limited, it is our duty to produce students who are able to function and contribute to modern society. The direction our society is headed in mandates that students be skillful technology users. If given an opportunity, students would be able to take advantage of resources available to them through our school.
My Project
Our school has invested in several technological innovations that can help students. For example, we have invested in 3M cloud library, which is an electronic book lending system. Obtaining iPad minis and eReaders would allow us to add these devices to our library circulation. Students can then use these devices to check out ebooks. Moreover, students can use these devices in class, which will help increase student engagement and collaboration. There are many educational apps that are not currently an option for teacher use because we do not have iPads. However, this donation would allow teachers to implement new programs in their classrooms. This would improve the quality of classroom instruction and management.
Exposure creates limitless opportunities.
The purchase of these devices and accessories will allow us an opportunity to teach students how to use and take advantage of high end technology. This will support competency in the college and career readiness standards.
