This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students come to the library to check out books. The Kindergarten through second grade students can check out one book; the third through fifth grade students can check out two books. At this time, we do not have enough fiction books to go around so our goal is to provide more books for this collection.
Our students are 95% African American, we have several Hispanic and Caucasian students.
Our students love to read, many of our students come from low income homes. 99% of our students receive free lunch. Our school sits in the heart of the Old Fourth Ward and borders the historic King Center.
My Project
These materials will be used to launch our book club. Our school does not have a book club. We are calling the club -Chat&Chew. The books requested will be given to the students as they join the book club. All students must be approved by their teacher and parent.
I believe that reading is fundamental to a student success.
Currently, our students are in desperate need of reading activities and support. We believe this project will help us make some gains in our reading goals.
