This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school computer room is well equipped, we have brand new computers to use in class, and are creating unique and exciting projects. We are in need of a video camera in order to create classroom videos with our video and photo unit.

My students currently are enrolled in an urban sixth through eighth grade middle school in South-Central Los Angeles.

Our community is close-knit, however many students are English Learners and many are currently on the free and reduced lunch program. With recent budget cuts we are unable to purchase additional resources to support our new computer lab. We have created a safe online community that allows our students to use social media and online technology tools, but are in great need of a video camera to use with our video and photography unit.

My Project

We are requesting two small hand held video cameras to use with our digital cameras to allow students to create original videos using our new desktops. Students have been able to practice using photographs they have saved on flash drives and through our digital cameras, so we have had practice using our video editing programs. Once we have the video cameras we are ready to begin filming videos about our lives. Students in our community find meaning in writing about and sharing pictures and video about their lives, so these projects will allow our students to share their personal experiences and grow as storytellers. Using these video cameras will allow students to move beyond just learning about computers and use videos to build personal digital stories.

This project will allow students to share their life story in a current, meaningful, and powerful way.

We do not have the ability to purchase these cameras through our school and our students would continue and grow as digital storytellers if they can be provided for their computer class.
