"Do we have to go if we aren't going to college?" This is the mindset of most of our 5th grade students and we are determined to change that for the better!
I teach a bilingual classroom in an urban school district.
My students are an energetic group of Spanish-dominant students that spend half of the day learning in Spanish and half of the day learning in English. We are in a school that has three different learning strands: Dual Language Immersion, English only and Bilingual Education. We serve a very diverse population with over 60 percent of students living in poverty; almost all of the students in my class make up part of that 60 percent. We are also unique in that minority cultures make up the majority of our school population.
My Project
My students need transportation to area colleges in order to expose them to their possibilities beyond high school. By going on this field trip, students will learn about their options beyond high school and all of the career paths that will open for them. These tours will engage students in discussions about the importance of higher education as well as the fact that it is possible, no matter your socioeconomic background.
This project will improve our classroom and 5th grade team by changing the students' negative perception of college and career opportunities.
Last year, the majority of our students did not even want to go on the field trip and by the end, 90% had made "plans" to attend one of the schools we visited. Unfortunately, bus costs have skyrocketed this year, and we are unable to afford the field trip without generous donations from Donors Choose donors.
