My Students

My students are all struggling readers who also have a dislike of reading. Throughout the past semester, we have worked to improve the attitude towards reading and improving our reading skills. These students have come a long way.

My students come from a low socioeconomic background in a rural area of NC.

They have consistently been told that they are low and can't catch up to their peers. This is so not true and they have proved it! These students have worked every day at learning how to read and ask for help. They have learned useful "fix up" strategies and how to apply them. They see themselves as competent readers now! The volunteers caring and continual help have shown these students that they matter.

My Project

With these resources we will have a celebratory book reading with our volunteers. The students will set up the tables with snacks. They will use manners, that now come naturally to them, by offering refreshments to the volunteers and then being allowed to have some themselves. They will read excerpts from their favorite book and tell stories of their reading journey and how the volunteers have helped them.

This is a very important time for my students.

They want to give back to the people who have supported them. Many of these students have been in my class before and this is the first year we have had such consistent volunteers that never gave up on them. Demonstrating a caring for these adults was my students' idea and one they want to follow through with, but need help.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
