This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
French, Spanish, Arabic, and English: those are the four languages that students in my first grade classroom speak and that only accounts for my students this year! We value diversity in my school, and I want to show its value by filling my classroom library with multicultural literature.
I am lucky to be working in a school that has students with varied ethnicities, languages, and cultures.
My students love to read, and they love to learn.
What better way to foster a classroom where the kids appreciate diversity than to have them read authentic, interesting children's picture books about diverse children like themselves and others they know?
They will have the chance to explore the wonderful similarities and differences in people that exist in this world through literature. My main goal is for them to not only learn to appreciate others by reading these multicultural books but also themselves.
My Project
Students will learn about all types of children their age that live in different places, speak different languages, and/or have a different culture from what they may be used to.
They love to listen and interact with me during read alouds. Read alouds with these books will make for really insightful, proactive talks about what they see in themselves and in the protagonists of the books. They'll also be engulfed in these books during library center time as they absorb the wonderful illustrations, captivating words, and interesting themes that each of these books has.
Your donations will help my first graders become familiar with the beautiful diversity that exists in this world as represented in the children's books from this project.
My students from all walks of life will feel a connection unlike any other they've felt when reading, as they read multicultural literature with protagonists that they can relate to personally or indirectly.
