My Students

Do you remember the last time that you struggled reading a word? Well every day in first grade students struggle with the words that we as adults read easily every day: SIGHT WORDS!

My first graders are excited to play games, sort letters, and write words every day.

The students at our Title I school work hard to learn how to read and understand all types of words. However sometimes the words we take for granted every day are the most difficult for students to learn to read. Those words are high-frequency or "sight" words. In our classroom we work independently every day practicing and reading as much as we can. It would be exciting for these students to have more opportunities to explore reading each day of their school year.

My Project

My students need puzzles, center materials, and manipulatives, such as Tubs O' Sight-Words and Practice Cards, Magnetic Sight-Word Sentence Boards and Stamp and Write Sight-Words to practice reading, spelling, and writing sight words. By purchasing sight word materials for the class and adding them to handmade activities I have created and can continue to create, my students will have the practice they need to recall sight words easily. Students in first grade must learn 200 or more sight words for the second grade, therefore having materials to manipulate the letters in sight words will help them to read, write, and use those words daily.

Once these materials are purchased my students will have the ability to practice reading single sight words, use sight word phrases, and create sentences using the words we use thousands of times a day.

These materials will impact students for years to come and I know my students will become better readers because of their excitement for learning new things in engaging activities such as these hands-on materials.
