Mrs. Suzuki from Arcadia CA is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Catalina Island Outdoor Science Camp

My students need funding support to help them attend this trip to Catalina Island. Costs have significantly raised from previous years and we need help decreasing them.

My Students

Imagine waking up in a tent on an island where the only thing you can explore is nature and its beauty, a place where batteries can only be found in a flashlight, where adventure is met with knowledge and curiosity to challenge fears and explore dreams. Welcome to my 7th Grade Outdoor Science Camp.

My students are just like any other kids.

They love to hang out with friends, gossip to each other, play video games, ride their bikes after school, play sports, do homework, procrastinate with homework, spend time with their family, and most importantly be themselves having fun. Sometimes they can get a little rambunctious, and may need a little guidance to steer them in the right direction. Yet, isn't that what we are here for? We help create the foundation for students to become individuals who will always strive for a better tomorrow. My students are the type of students who bring the right mindset and attitude to engage in activities that help them grow as individuals, because they are always ready to work as a team to overcome any obstacle in their way. They use their wits to solve complicated problems, their heart to battle emotional struggles, and their courage to persevere. But the best thing about my kids is the smile that lights up their faces from life’s simplest joys.

My Project

At CIOSC, students will have the opportunity to be involved in various activities that will not only engage them in discovering new facts about Biology and Ecology, but also put them out of their comfort zone and expose them to new sights they have never imagined. These activities include, but are not limited to: Squid Dissection- Become a sushi chef and find ink to work on your John Hancock. Kelp Snorkel- Snorkel through a kelp forest to find the local inhabitants, like the state fish, without getting stuck. Bird Survey Kayak- Kayak out to the big rock to find yourself surrounded by flocks of birds eyeing their prey. Plankton Lab- Don't look for them in the Chum Bucket. Swim along with them anywhere in the water. Vertebrate/Invertebrate Lab- What has a spine? Nature Hike- Find varying types of edible trees and cacti on a hike through the mountains. Astronomy- Gaze into the stories the night skies behold. Dream Campfire- Let the campfire burn as deep as your passions.

This trip fosters student independence, exposes students to new, invigorating experiences, and allows them to learn science in a natural setting--outdoors and in the ocean!

Students will build upon current friendships and make new ones. They will also have an opportunity to interact and grow personally as well as with staff outside the normal classroom setting.
